The most important question on earth is who am I, and the greatest discovery in life is the discovery of one’s true self. This article seeks to help you answer this question and also inculcate in you the hunger for discovering your true self. Discovering who you are is discovering your true source (where you came from), your potentials and abilities, your position or authority, your purpose and power. Now let me tell you a profound story which will give you a clear picture of what I want to tell you.
Once upon a time in the history of mankind there lived a king and his kingdom. The king had a four year old graceful son who was loved by everyone who set eye on him. The king dearly loved his son since he was his first son and therefore next of kin to his throne. Unfortunately, due to some mysterious circumstances the son got lost. The king used all his power to do all he could but he could not get back his dearly beloved son. The son was found by some traders who had gone to trade and were going back to their village and they took the young prince along to their village. He lived in that village till he was 20yrs. He was cultured by the villagers and therefore took the norms and values of the villagers. He was raised as a slave and thought like a slave. He had believed that those villagers were his family; he had lost his identity and taken on a false one. He had come to believe that he is a villager a slave a nobody who has no power or anything significant to offer in life. Mysteriously once again he found himself working in the palace where he was born as a servant following his departure from the village in pursuit of a better life. This young prince worked in the palace where he was supposed to be a prince as a servant, he ate food meant for servants, had no power or rights in the palace, drunk from the cup of servants, The royal family treated him like any other servant and he accepted it. The lost prince remained a servant until his last breath on earth. When his father died he was succeeded by one of the family members and the lost prince served him as his servant. What a tragedy. Unfortunately, this has been the story of many people. We are born to inherit the earth, to live as kings and rule and subdue the earth and inprint our will on earth but many have been reduced to slaves in life due to the ignorance of who they truly are. Now these are the lessons that I gathered from this story:
The amount of power you exercise in life is not dependent on the amount of power you have but rather on the amount of power you know and believe you possess. This means that you might have power or authority to do something or to control something and make something happen and might not be able to use it if you are not aware of it. This means that not knowing who you truly are limits your power or even at worse takes away your power just like the lost prince.
Not knowing who you are also strips off your rights. This is because if you don’t know your rights you cannot demand them. The lost prince had the right to be treated as a prince. He had the right to dress as a royalty, to sleep like one, to eat like one and also had the right to succeed his father, but he could exercise none of it because of his ignorance of who he truly was. Ignorance of our abilities, gifts, potentials and purpose is a result of our ignorance of who we truly are. Ignorance of these things usually results in laziness and boredom. you cannot use an ability or potential that you are ignorant of.This can best be explained with the statement made by an English writer called James Allen, he said, “the will to do springs from the knowledge that we can do.” This simply means you will be much more willing to do something that you know you can than that which you don’t know you can. Most of the time people are lazy not because they want to be lazy but because they don’t know what they can do, they are unaware of their gifts and potentials. So my question to you right now is could it be that you have the potential to own your own bank but yet might work in another person’s bank till you die? Could it be that you have the ability to become the secretory of the United Nations but might work as a teacher in your entire life? You see the things that you reach out for in life are largely dependent on your knowledge of your abilities, gifts and potentials. So what can you truly do? Remember the lost prince had the power and the ability and the right by birth to reach out for the throne of his father after his death but he could not because he didn’t know he had the power to. How far can you go in life? What are your gifts and potentials? What are you truly made of? These questions must be answered by you if you want to live a fulfilling life. It is also very important to know that it is possible to believe you are something you are not.
Most of the time what we have come to believe about ourselves are what our family members, teachers and friends told us. But are they the right people to tell us who we are? So then who is the right person to tell you who you are and what you can do and how far you can go. The answer to these questions is simple but has eluded many people. If I give you a device of which you know nothing of, you don’t know what it is, what it can do and what it is made up of. Who do you think would be the right person to find out from? Me. right? Why? Because I am the one who gave it to you and the one who made it. if you want to know the potential of a Toyota car, its horse power, its capacity and you want to understand how it works then I believe the best person to go to is the Toyota company. So then if you want to know who you truly are then you must go to the one who made you. The one who gave you life is the right person to tell you why he gave it to you. He is the person to tell you what you can do and cannot do, how far you can go in life, your ability, power, gifts and potentials. Therefore God is the answer to these questions. He made us and he knows what he put in us, he knows our capacity and ability on earth.
